A Police Officer is responsible for enforcing laws, preventing crime, responding to emergencies, and protecting people and property. Officers work in a variety of environments such as city streets, residential areas, public facilities, and community events.
Police officers are highly trained professionals who must be ready to respond quickly and effectively in different situations. Their role involves interacting with members of the public, conducting patrols, investigating incidents, and assisting individuals who may be in danger or need support.
The work of a police officer often requires teamwork with other law enforcement personnel, emergency responders, and community organizations. Together, they ensure that public safety remains a top priority.
This position will work the second shift (3pm-11pm) and be required to work weekends. This position may also require working additional and/or different shifts when needed.
The DePauw Police Officer is a fully sworn law enforcement officer per Indiana code 21-17-5. Officers provide for the overall safety and security of the university community and its properties. Officers must complete the Indiana Law Enforcement Training Board Certification and maintain their certification annually. DePauw Police Officers are charged with enforcing federal and state laws, as well as University policies. Officers provide proactive patrols, respond to calls for service and to emergencies, as well as provide educational programming to provide for a safe campus environment.

A police officer’s primary duty is enforcing laws and regulations designed to protect the public. Officers ensure that individuals follow the rules established by local, state, or national authorities.
If a law is broken, officers may issue warnings, citations, or make arrests depending on the situation. However, law enforcement is not only about punishment—it also involves educating people about the law and encouraging responsible behavior within the community.
Police officers must perform their duties fairly and professionally while respecting the rights of all individuals.
Skills & Abilities Education: High School Graduate or General Education Degree (GED) required. Associate degree or higher in a Criminal Justice or related area preferred.
Experience: Higher education background and/or law enforcement training preferred.
Computer Skills: Capable of learning Records Management software and proficient with Microsoft Office Suite products, Google Apps, (Gmail, Google Drive, Calendar).
Communication/Language: Basic: Ability to read, listen to and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write and communicate simple correspondence.
Math Ability: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
Certificates & Licenses
Must have completed the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy training (ILETB standards) or an equivalent training program accepted by the ILETB (Indiana Law Enforcement Training Board), or be willing to complete the ILETB certification process within one year of date of hire. Must become IDACS certified. Must be able to maintain Indiana Police Officer certification including the completion of yearly mandated training. Meet physical requirements set by the ILETB. Tier 1 preferred.
Other Requirements Must be a United States citizen. Must have no felony convictions or domestic violence convictions or pending criminal cases. A strong commitment to customer service. Strong leadership, verbal/written communication, interpersonal relationship skills, organizational skills and public relations skills are essential. Must have strong conflict resolution skills and problem-solving ability. Must be able to adapt and react to unusual conditions and work effectively under pressure. Must have a good working knowledge of Federal, State and local law, including traffic codes. Must have working knowledge of Incident Command System (ICS). Must be physically and mentally capable of performing all duties of a police officer. Veterans encouraged to apply.
